A socio-spatial scientist and Director of Healthcare Environments at Steelcase Health, Michelle Ossmann is dedicated to improving healthcare quality and safety through rigorous design research. Receiving both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from Emory University, Michelle spent 10 years in clinical care as an emergency department nurse and then neurocritical care nurse practitioner. It was during the redesign of her own ICU that Michelle saw the need for clinician expertise from within design, earning a PhD in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology, specializing in the intersection of architecture, culture, and behavior - particularly the spatial and visual organization of buildings. Michelle leads the research focus in health-environment design at Steelcase Health, using human-centered design, qualitative, and quantitative research methods to inform product development and investigate the links between the built environment and organizational outcomes.
