The competition allows entries from any department treating and caring directly for patients, in any healthcare facility operating within the primary, community, secondary or tertiary care sectors in the UK. This includes, but is not restricted to, medical wards and clinical departments of general, district, specialised and teaching hospitals, as well as clinics. Winners will be invited to participate in the European Healthcare Design 2018 Congress to accept the donation.

To enter, teams need to submit information in a number of areas, including: demonstrating their knowledge of the impact of the environment on patient recovery; describing their department’s vision for their internal environment; and illustrating how staff, patients, families and visitors will benefit from the installation of the lighting solutions. There is also the potential for Visualite to carry out a post-installation evaluation of the solutions.

Entries will be judged by an expert panel comprising: Stephanie Williamson, deputy director of development, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children; Dr Robin Baddeley, editorial registrar, BMJ; and Jonathan West, senior fellow, Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, Royal College of Art.

Teams wishing to enter the competition should complete the application form by no later than 12 noon on 30 March 2018, demonstrating their suitability to receive the donation according to the criteria set by the competition organisers. All applications must also include an award nomination letter from a senior board-level executive in support of the department’s submission.
