Susan Francis

Susan is programme director for Architects for Health, a RIBA Linked Society and membership organisation for design professionals in the UK.

At CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment), Susan was the special advisor for health and worked closely with the Department of Health on built environment policy development. Responsibilities included: leading the NHS Design Review Programme; directing research and policy development on community hospitals and sustainable design; and devising and developing the Future Health Initiative, which demonstrated how design can help deliver sustainable places for health and wellbeing.

At the NHS Confederation, Susan was architectural lead to the Future Healthcare Network, a multi-disciplinary team that facilitated a learning network for more than 80 NHS trusts engaged in major capital developments for hospital, primary care and mental health services.

Qualified as an architect, Susan has worked in practice and as an academic at MARU developing research, presentations, publications and post-graduate training in this specialised field for 20 years. She has recently presented at international conferences and events in the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, France, Dubai and India, as well as being a regular presenter at UK conferences.
